The future will be a time of innovation, marked by the challenges of globalization, shifting strategic, economic and business alliances, the speed of technological developments in IT and the changes forced by the current economic and financial crisis. Customers have new requirements and increasingly complex consumer behaviour. More than ever before, the factor which best ensures profitable, sustainable growth for companies and other organizations is to be attentive to these needs. In this context, motivates by values such as ethics and humanism, the ESAM (part of the IGS Group), has built a recognised five-year higher education structure, for and in conjunction with the business world. These courses combine demanding academic standards, personal development, hands-on professional experience and a global vision. The goals of the ESAM are ambitious, pragmatic and up-to-date: teaching people to become enterprising managers, responsible decision makers, to be audacious, creative and efficient. In other words, to be free-spirited, enthusiastic men and women who are winners, who have the ideal of solidarity and who care about the consequences of their actions on the national and the global scale, in the near as well as in the distant future. These new “hands-on” managers and entrepreneurs need to be people who can make recommendations, instigate changes, integrate complex networks and know how to mobilize teams. They need to be able to react fast within a European and international context. The ESAM, through its closeness to the business world, with its very high-quality educational team, its support from a very active alumni network, and its partnerships with over sixty universities throughout the world, ranks among the most advanced schools of management. By encouraging students to be self-reliant and to take initiatives through the use of information and communication techniques and project guidance, the ESAM brings out and nurtures their entrepreneurial spirit. At ESAM, students are not mere spectators in their education. They begin playing leading roles in their own lives. The guiding principle of the ESAM is to avoid “cloning” students. We value the individual. We want our students to enjoy their studies, to dream, to hope, to dare and to commit themselves, because entrepreneurship means all of those at one and the same time. We are also firmly of the opinion that talent is not the preserve of a particular “élite corps” of students. In our opinion, every student has talent, regardless of its nature and the way in which it is expressed. Let us simply give them the chance to reveal it. Companies are crying out for the right people to secure their future. So choose the ESAM, and you’ll be one of them, and you’ll be one step nearer to becoming the entrepreneur of your dreams! “Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Professional and university recognition The ESAM’s 5-year academic programme, developed in partnership with the IAE (Business Administration Institute) of the University of Lille 1, has been recognised at professional and university level, and consists of two academic phases: • Bachelor’s Degree (3 years) • Professional Master’s Degree (2 years) After 3 years: Bachelor’s Degree in Management Sciences, awarded by the IAE of the University of Lille 1.. After 4 years: Level II state-certified title* ‘Company Administration Manager’ awarded by the ESAM; (Journal Officiel issue 03/03/2007, Code NSF 310m). After 5 years: - Professional Master’s Degree in Managing and Running a Business, awarded by the ESAM; - Professional Master’s Diploma, awarded by the IAE of the University of Lille 1 Clear and precise educational targets As an innovator in knowledge transfer, the ESAM has based its teaching methods on creating a culture of initiative and creativity throughout the curriculum. An international and multi- cultural study programme The ESAM is continually expanding the opportunities it offers for gaining experience abroad (European stays, professional assignments, study periods in universities, and so on). It takes advantage of its extensive international network of partner universities and schools, and puts strong emphasis on intensive foreign language learning: 3 languages including English and Chinese. Courses in Semester 5 are taught in English. International transparency The ESAM academic system has set up equivalent rating systems and credit transfers by working with more than sixty universities and state-run or private schools both in France and abroad. It is based on the use of standardized systems (ECTS: European Credit Transfer System), which are recognized throughout the world. This enables exchanges to take place between one or more student and teacher programmes and another. Recognized European standing The ESAM is a member of the European Management Academy (EMA). This network consists of well over twenty European schools, specialising in business and in company management. Furthermore, its European stature has entitled the ESAM to hold the ERASMUS* charter, thus enabling students to benefit from mobility grants for academic semesters and placements. * Paris and Lyon International transparency Widely renowned teaching staff Recognized for their expertise in their specific field of work, the ESAM teaching staff presents a wide-range of profiles: academics, consultants, professionals and full-time lecturers. A hands-on approach based on professional skills Students become professionally adept thanks to the hands-on experience they receive throughout their studies such as running projects, and different in-company assignments in France and abroad and also by creating and running associations and clubs An efficient system of study So that students may acquire more than knowledge alone, ESAM encourages all students to develop their employability. During the specific “Developing Human Capital” modules, students are helped to draw up their Pass’Pro skills passports. The ESAM also gives students the chance to build up experience through placements both in France and abroad. To satisfy students who wish to gain solid professional skills, from the 4th year onwards, the ESAM provides the opportunity to pursue their studies through a sandwich course system: vocational contracts, part-time work (or a partnership convention) and apprenticeship indentures in partnership with the CFA (Apprentices Training Centre) of the IGS Group. A motivated alumni network Underpinning the philosophy and values of the ESAM ever since it was founded, this network of former students active throughout the world is imbued with a spirit of solidarity and a generous sense of ethics An intense student life A college is a living place where life should be good. At ESAM, the students’ initiative and group emulation, when working on projects of various kinds—cultural, sporting, social, humanitarian and so on— in line with the European and international university tradition, build the “soul” of the college. For ESAM, project carried through by students are an expression of an ambition: to outgrow the range of possibilities. Creation, production, commitment, and so on, are the “ingredients” that give meaning to the desire to dare. . 06 Mentoring an excellent educational plan The ESAM’s mentors are personalities from the international level of the business world, genuine entrepreneurs, whose support provides confirmation of the superb level of the ESAM’s scholastic scheme. In particular, they mentor the graduating classes. Some of our mentors... Roger DUTOITAlain TANUGI In the values promulgated by the ESAM, I have found an answer to the expectations of business… I was particularly impressed by the emphasis placed on the student as a person, the student as an individual… What are we looking for when recruiting staff? I’ve found myself in this situation over and over again, and most of the time I’ve had to choose from among several candidates who have all learned sales techniques, who have a grasp of organisation, management, the law, accounting and finance, and who all speak English fluently. So what makes the difference? Often, it’s an overall impression that the applicant facing us is comfortable with him or herself. Quite simply, the impression that someone is well-rounded, calm, and will soon be autonomous—and I can assure you that to a manager who never has much time available, staff autonomy really is the most important quality. The emphasis that the ESAM places on this point is exactly right! As someone who works in an international Group, I can’t help being highly impressed by the thoroughly relevant inclusion of the international aspect inside ESAM, and its commitment to helping you forge a multicultural identity… Pascale Grasset, Vice-President of Alstom Transport Mentor of the class of 2009 You’ll find your place in the business world Taoufiq BOUSSAID Vice-President of Finance, Bombardier Group Mentor of the class of 2010 Pascale GRASSET Vice-President of Alstom Transport Mentor of the class of 2009 Roger DUTOIT President of Brinks France, Vice-President of Brinks Europe Mentor of the class of 2008 Jean-Charles NAOURI President of the Casino Group Mentor of the class of 2007 Alain TANUGI President of Transearch International Mentor of the class of 2006 Jean-Pierre LEMONNIER President of Manpower France Mentor of the class of 2005 Pascal DARMON President of Actif SA Group Mentor of the class of 2003 André MOTTE Chairman of the Board of Courtepaille Serare Mentor of the class of 2002 Nurture your enterprising spirit “One should not judge the merit of a man by his great qualities, but by the use he can make of them.” François de La Rochefoucauld, The Maxims The ESAM was founded in 1987 spurred on by French and European companies who were calling for a more ‘skills based’ approach to teaching. As a result, this 5-year school of operational management has put skills and human qualities at the heart of its pedagogy. Indeed, the skills of businessmen and women who shape company performance, must be anticipated, optimized and maintained in order to keep up with constantly changing trends and developments in the socioeconomic environment. Furthermore, human qualities reveal individuals in all their behavioural intelligence. The ESAM trains entrepreneurial managers who are responsible and professional, well suited to the international requirements of companies, and instils the entrepreneurial spiritthroughdaring, seekingnewchallenges, innovating and exploring unknown frontiers. Undertaking new ventures is about creating wealth and values At the ESAM we believe that without this enterprising spirit, there would be no challenges, no ambitions to fulfil; there would be no great human adventures. The ESAM therefore encourages its students to nurture a spirit of enterprise. Encouraging a taste for success does not mean having a fear of failure. On the contrary, you should be proud to have tried and clear-minded enough to analyse the causes of the setback and come out of the experience stronger, more mature and with greater experience. We are all entrepreneurs of our own professional lives 08 Learning to be an entrepreneur Giving high priority to the individual development of all its students and to the furtherance of their career plans, the ESAM has set up a thoroughly pragmatic approach to teaching, aimed at developing the entrepreneurial mind-set. Consequently, the academic structure of the programme has been designed and implemented on the basis of four generic learning objectives contained diagram below. The goals are to develop entrepreneurial talents and action-oriented behaviour patterns: creativity, initiative and autonomy, responsibility and solidarity, efficiency, the need to endow oneself with a set of “virtues”, knowledge, professional skills and life skills. The ESAM has adopted the European standards for higher education, which prescribe a structure for the 5-year academic programme as two educational phases: Phase 1 3-year Vocational Bachelor’s Degree focused on general education in company administration and management. Phase 2 2-year Professional Master’s Degree specialising in one of the four following fields: Audit, Administration, Finance — Entrepreneurship and Business Creation — Management of Organisations and Business Units — Legal Management of a Company. The curriculum is organised into 10 semesters of study (see diagram on following page). LEARNING TO UNDERSTAND LEARNING TO LEARN LEARNING TO BE AN ENTREPRENEUR EXPERIENCES LESSONS KNOWLEDGE BEHAVIOUR LEARNING TO COMMUNICATE LEARNING TO DECIDE The ESAM encourages and stimulates the entrepreneurial spirit of its students through action-driven teaching: experiments, running projects, vocational practical work, placements in companies, both in France and abroad, university terms in foreign countries, integration seminars, intensive use of languages, coaching, sport, participation in associations, and lectures too. To enable students to discover their full potential, the ESAM has put personal growth at the heart of its pedagogy. The result? Students who are: Ready to bring their operational skills to a company as soon as they leave the school, Specialists in their field of study, Able to advance easily within the company Self-reliant and responsible. In such a context, the active and interactive pedagogy characteristic of the mode of study at the ESAM has been designed so as to support all the students as they progressively build their career plans. Professional education The pedagogical direction is defined by ESAM’s Scientific and Professional Advisory Board which not only checks that the ESAM syllabus is adapted to requirements in the field, but also brings in top level business people to give lectures, lessons and seminars. This vigilant approach aids students to define their career path and find their feet rapidly in the business world. Inter-class sharing of experience “Meet and share” times, warmly appreciated by students, are organised by the ESAM at key periods of the academic year among the various classes, so that they can discuss their diverse experiences (international, placements, practical work, and so on) and the launch of their professional careers (from alumni).
