Yours warmly, Désirée Deul Chief Editor Trends & News in December BEAUTIES IN MOTION For ten young women from across Europe, the competition in Hanover, Germany last month was about making the point that disability should not detract from beauty. The Beauties in Motion in 2007 competition is for physically handicapped women, and is aimed at boosting their confidence, showing them that their disabilities don’t make them any less beautiful. “In smart casual togs or long evening dresses in brilliant colours, Milena of Macedonia, Gerardina of Italy and Germany’s Ines relished the limelight as hundreds of spectators looked on and a professional jury sized them up,” Yahoo news said. “Each of the women was aiming to see her face splashed across a magazine cover or featured in a television commercial.” "It's possible!" said Jelena Zdravkovic, 23, a pretty blonde Serb competitor. "But there is still a lot to do to fight prejudice because people often do not think that beauty and a disability can go together." (news.yahoo) WINE AND YOGA – A WEIRD COMBINATION ? Experimenting with different wine pairings is fun, but who knew it could be really beneficial for your health too? No, I’m not talking about antioxidants; I’m referring to Vino-yasa! This innovative approach to pairing supplements your favourite reds and white with yoga stretches. It could just be the next big thing in health, taking exercise to a whole new level of bliss. “Which asana goes best with Pinot Grigio? And when drinking a cab franc, should one invert or just go with the hatha flow?” asks Vital Juice Daily. “These are the quandaries that plague the nationwide trend of blurring yoga and wine—with workshops popping up like corks in yoga studios, wineries and on retreats worldwide. L.A. based David Romanelli of Yeah Dave Yoga (also Yahoo’s Mind-Body expert) and Angela Gargano of Bliss Flow Yoga in Madison, WI go on tour together, promoting this unique blend of antioxidant rich wines and detoxifying stretches. “Together they tour the nation—and recently offered a sold-out ‘experience’ in Umbria, Italy with their own house blend of swirl and shivasana,” Vital Juice Daily said. They also host workshops in cities in Southern California, upstate New York and even in Vancouver, Canada. www.vitaljuicedaily.com DETOX AT HOME – OXYGEN HOME BAR Go a little overboard at the shopping mall? PICNIC CROCKERY THAT YOU CAN USE AS A FRISBEE TOO Lighten and brighten your outdoor experience with colourful flat folding plates, cups, mugs dishes and bowls. The concept sprouts from Origami, the ancient eastern art of folding paper into beautiful shapes. Orikaso Dinnerware is not made out of paper however, it is manufactured from PVC a greenpeace approved polypropylene plastic, very easy to clean (no corners because it is flat) and indestructable. The more you fold it the more durable it becomes and it is able to withstand boiling liquid up to 100 degrees. The Orikaso Dish has been used successfully in the microwave. The unique design brings all the edges to the same height above the base allowing it to hold liquids and be stable. December Interview At 63 years young, Yvonne Peeters is still the confident, vivacious woman she was while at the head of a male dominated industry. The woman that brought “telephone marketing” to the Benelux and introduced breakfast meetings for an optimal use of work hours . We interviewed Mrs. Peeters at her beautiful penthouse overlooking the luscious green Golf Course in Brasschaat, the crème de la crème of places to live in Belgium. E&E : Where did your career start and how did you manage to get to the position of CEO? Y.P. : At 27 years old, I had just had a divorce and moved to Belgium with my two young children. Due to the high cost of childcare I was forced to find a job that paid well yet left me with enough time to be with my children. I was therefore highly motivated to find a suitable job. When Avon needed a sales director for the Benelux, I applied and was chosen above 600 applicants. I didn't really have the credentials but my motto was and still is “if you can do it, I can do it too, and probably better”. Under my supervision I tripled their turnover and completely modified their marketing strategies within seven years, making them the best in the Benelux. After that, I felt I had outgrown my position and was asked to become CEO for a new company called Vending Industries. The company was a pioneer of its time whereby fresh coffee was ready available through a vending machine. I built the company up from scratch being involved with every aspect of the company from the logo design to the technical service. Of course this was male territory so in order for me to earn the respect of my male subordinates and have them take me seriously, I taught myself how to take the vending machine apart bit by bit and put the whole machine back together again withou the help of a technician. If I was going to sell the machine, I had to know how it worked. This to me, is vital in sales, knowing your product inside out and it earned me the complete respect of all the male employees within the company. I worked with Vending Industries till my children became teenagers and it was at that point I noticed that they needed me at home more often. I therefore left my post as CEO with Vending Industries and took a job as COO for another company which was just starting up. This time however, thanks to my reputation and work history, my contract stated that I would only work during school hours and have vacation every time the children had school vacations. I had all the perks and benefits of a full time paycheck but none of the drawbacks. Again, I built this company from the ground up until it was making huge profits and the company was running effectively. I decided to slow down a little so I quit my position as COO. Since then I have enjoyed helping new companies start up from time to time and have taken full advantage of my spare time travelling quite often and spending time with my grandchild. E&E : What was the biggest highlight in your career? Y.P. : Apart from the many trips overseas, the satisfaction of setting up a company from scratch and turning them into huge profit makers, the biggest highlight of my life was the fact that I was able to combine my work with raising my children. E&E : If you could give advice to anyone on how they could lead such a fulfilling and rewarding career, what would it be? Y.P. : Always carefully prepare your work. I spent many nights awake till 2 a.m. Preparing and planning my work. If you do so, that's 50% of your job already taken care of. E&E : Do you feel like a role model for the younger generation of women who are eager to climb to the position of CEO.? Y.P. : I wouldn't say role model, but I would encourage every woman to know their product, know their company and that in turn will give you the confidence you need to climb up the ladder of success. E&E : What did it feel like to be in charge of so many employees at one time? (Mrs. Peeters had over 400 sales people working for her) Y.P. : Actually, without sounding cocky, it felt normal. I didn't feel any better than my employees but I certainly didn't feel any less and like I said before, I just knew I could do anything I really wanted to do, it never came to mind that I might fail. E&E : What was the one thing you couldn't (can't) live without during your career? Y.P. : On number one ....my children. My entire motivation was them, it wasn't the prestige, nor the honor but the financial aspect, in wanting to be able to give my children everything they needed. They weren't spoiled but as a single mom and receiving no alimony I had two choices, either be miserable and receive a small amount form the state or use my desire to help my children and have a financially and rewarding career, I chose the latter. E&E : What did you do for fun ? Y.P. : To tell you the truth, between working and raising the children I didn't have much time for hobbies or socializing. My children were my enjoyment and as a rule we went on vacation 3 times a year, this gave us plenty of time lone together and me time to charge my batteries so to speak. E&E : Thank you for your time and shring your story with us. Y.P. : You are very welcome. Written by Peggy Young NOTICE BOARD FOR OUR READERS !! Travel suggestion !! from Cherie Adler, Phoenix, AZ.
